Bibliographical exhibition Emilio Varela and the art of his time
The year 2017 was celebrated the 130th anniversary of the birth of the painter from Alicante Emilio Varela (1887-1951). For this reason, the Museum of Fine Arts Gravina (MUBAG) made a very complete retrospective exhibition on the work of this great artist.
Since then, various activities have been carried out in order to make known the work of this avant-garde painter. For this reason, the MUA and the University Library offer you a traveling exhibition about Emilio Varela that you can visit in the lobby of the General Library building from September 17 to October 31. This activity is part of the line of support for the informative and investigative work carried out by both university services. The opening ceremony will take place on September 18 at 1:00 p.m. on the ground floor of the Library.
Emilio Varela captured in a clear and luminous way many of the most significant corners of Alicante and its province: the Esplanade, the port, the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the Casino, the neighborhood of Santa Cruz, San Nicolás, the Benacantil, the towers from the orchard, the sea, the mountains, the Peñón de Ifach, Benimantell, the monastery of Santa Faz, etc.
Through his teacher Joaquín Sorolla he met and became a great friend of composer Óscar Esplá. "Both laid some of the foundations of Levantine and Spanish modernity".
