Women's Empowerment

The Library of Economics, as a contribution to International Women's Day 2020 , has prepared an exhibition on female empowerment with recent bibliographic resources (monographs and a selection of scientific articles retrieved from the CSIC database). From March 9 to 31 you can visit the exhibition on the ground floor of the Library.

According to the Humanitarian Action Dictionary , the term empowerment is “the process by which people strengthen their abilities, confidence, vision and prominence as a social group to drive positive changes in the situations they live in . (, consulted 03/03/2020) Applied to the reality of women, marginalized in so many societies and for so long, the empowerment of women ranges from individual change to collective action, and involves drastic alteration of structures and processes that develop the subject status of women as gender.

In 2004, the Principles for the Empowerment of Women were published, the result of a collaboration between UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact.

They can be summarized in the following:

  • Promote gender equality from management to the highest level.
  • Treat all men and women equally at work; Respect and defend human rights and non-discrimination.
  • Ensure the health, safety and welfare of all workers.
  • Promote the education, training and professional development of women.
  • Carry out business development, supply chain and marketing practices in favor of women's empowerment.
  • Promote equality through community initiatives.
  • Evaluate and disseminate the progress made in favor of gender equality.
