Scheduled or on-demand sessions

They are courses organized by Punt BIU (Library Information Point to the User). Attendance is free, prior registration is required, indicating the date and time of preference for the session, through the form available in the information of each of the courses. We will contact the interested persons to specify the final date.

The departments or administrative units of the UA can reserve sessions for their teachers or their staff. In addition, teachers can request sessions for student groups.
The courses will be taught in the General Library Building. Computer room of the Ground Floor, in the morning and / or afternoon. In the case of courses to be taught to groups of undergraduate, master or doctoral students within the framework of a subject, the classroom will be reserved by the teaching staff through the Space Management Unit, when the number of Attendees exceed the capacity of the computer rooms of the General Library.

Organize, share and automate your own information (EXCLUDED FROM ONLINE TRAINING)

Content: In this course we will learn to manage all the information that we locate by surfing the Internet through the use of social bookmarks, which will allow us to organize, tag and share links with other users.
We will also use tools that allow us to receive information automatically according to our needs and interests. Through RSS we will create alerts to receive automatic notifications every time our favorite content is updated.
In addition, we will know IFTTT, a curious application that allows to automate actions in channels and web services through conditions.

Objectives:

  • Know and use tools to organize, manage and share information (Diigo).
  • Know the use of tools to automate the reception of the most current information that is of our interest (Feedly, Netvibes, IFTTT).

The Library in one click. The virtual services of the Library through the web page

Content: Tour by the main virtual services that the Library of the UA offers, as well as another information of interest provided by the web page.

Objectives: 

  • Know and use the main virtual services the Library offers: reservation and renewal of materials in loan, profile of user management, reservation of group work rooms, remote access to the electronic resources, queries to the library staff, query of recommended bibliography, acquisition of new materials.
  • Know another information of interest like types and periods of loan, usual schedules and extraordinary openings, charter of services, special collections, normative, guides and tutorials.

Looking for books, films or music?: use the catalogue

Content: The catalogue is the tool providing information on all the printed documents (books, journals, newspapers) and multimedia (music, films, programs), in addition to some electronic documents, included in the collection of the University Library. It shows information about location, number of copies and availability of the documents. Through the catalogue we will be able to manage our profile, consult our borrowed materials and make renewals and reservations.

Objectives:

  • Know and use the services offered in the catalogue: consult the user profile, change the PIN, renew loans, place hold requests and configure My Profile (favourite authors and subjects).
  • Learn to use the difrerent fields (author, title, title of magazine, subject, all the fields), options of search (basic, advanced and by call number), and ways of research (keyword, alphabetic and exact listing), as well as the options of limitation of the references recovered (by library, format, type of document, language, year of publication).
  • Use the operators of search and the truncations and pose the most effective strategy of research.
  • Apply the options of visualisation, ordination and selection of registers to facilitate their recovery, through the different possibilities: print, save, send by email.
  • Learn to locate the different type of documents and know how to interpret the information offered (books, films, magazines, electronic documents).
  • Consult the recommended bibliography, the new acquisitions, the digital collections and the special collections of the library.

Scientific information in Spanish: Dialnet and CSIC

Content : Tour by the main national databases compiling scientific and academic information in Spanish. Dialnet Is a cooperation multidisciplinary tool between the Spanish university libraries, including articles of journals, books, chapters of books and doctoral thesis, giving information on authors and magazines, as well as the full text of many documents in open access. The databases of the CSIC (ICYT, ISOC and IME) contain the scientific production published in Spain from the years 1970. They collect fundamentally articles of scientific journals and of selective form records of congresses, series and compilations.

Objectives:

  • Learn to use the different options of search of documents (basic, advanced, indexes) and filter the references recovered (by subject, institution, language, type of publication, year of publication).
  • Learn to use the operators of search and pose the the most effective strategy of research.
  • Know the options of navigation on the summaries of the indexed journals and the complementary information on the journals.
  • Apply the options of ordination and selection of registers to facilitate their recovery, through the distinct possibilities: print, send by email and export references (bibliographic references managers and other exit formats).
  • Access to the full text of the articles in free access.
  • Learn to save searches and create and suppress alerts in Dialnet (journal and research) and the options of the research history of of the CSIC.

Look for scientific information in several resources at the same time: the Library finder

Content: Tool, managed by the OCLC (On-line Computer Library Center), that allows us to consult simultaneous resources of information from the Library of the UA and, besides, the collections of a series of libraries from all over the world. It gives access to the full text of the documents in free access or published in subscribed resources by the institution.

Objectives :

  • Know the resources from which locating Worldcat information and learn to search in all or only in the selected information source.
  • Learn to use the different fields and options of search (simple and advanced, in all the participant libraries or only in the University of Alicante Library), as well as the options to refine the results (resource of origin, type of document, complete text, date, author, subject).
  • Learn to use the operators of search and pose the the most effective strategy of search.
  • Locate any type of document or only one concrete, also in electronic format (journals, books, articles of journals).
  • Learn to interpret the information on the availability or of the full text of the documents in the search results, and get them.
  • Learn to export the results to a reference manager, a compatible document with any word-processing programm, or a browser web.
  • Know how to create a user profile with the favourite collections,save the searches realised, create lists of selected materials and share them, label resources to group them, etc.

Databases and electronic journals. Where do I start looking?

Content:  First, we will learn to decide where to start looking and for this it will be necessary to know the characteristics of the different sources of information.
Secondly, we will carry out searches in databases and electronic journals, elaborating search strategies and using advanced techniques with truncations and Boolean operators.
We will finish with access to the full content of the article, either in electronic or printed format.

Objectives :

  • Know the characteristics of each source of information.
  • Learn the theoretical-practical concepts of the search and use the search tools: operators, truncations and search fields.
  • Consult the databases of a knowledge area or a specific database and know the different database platforms that the UA library has contracted.
  • Learn to interpret the information provided by the database search engine: simultaneity of use, content, free or not, availability of guides or tutorials.
  • Learn to use the search engine of electronic journals, to interpret the availability information of the full text of the subscribed or free magazines and to access them.
  • Know the different portals of e-journals subscribed by the UA, as well as the open access portals, both multidisciplinary and specialized.
  • Know what a portal of electronic journals is and learn how to use its different functionalities (browsing through subscribed magazines, searching magazines, searching for articles, consulting full-text articles, selecting records and export options, creating alerts, saving searches, ...).

Open scientific information: Institutional Repositories

Content: The institutional repositories are tools that compile scientific, educational or institutional information of the organisations keeping them. This course will centre in the institutional repository of the UA (RUA) and the main search engines of spanish institutional repositories (Recolecta, E-Ciencia).

Objectives :

  • Know the repository of the University of Alicante and use the distinct options of search and visualisation or download of documents.
  • Know Recolecta and E-Ciencia and learn the different functionalities of search (basic and advanced, operators, truncations).
  • Know the existence of repositories stood out to national or international level of the distinct thematic areas.

Internet and Google search engines (EXCLUDED FROM ONLINE TRAINING)

Content:  At the end of the course, the students will have an overview of the evolution of the internet as an information tool and the most common methods of use for the extraction of it, as well as the difficulties involved in finding information in this environment. The differences between a search engine and a directory and the structure of a search engine will be explained, focusing on Google. The possibilities and limitations of it and its suitability to find useful information for academic work will be explored. You will see the advanced features of Google and other complementary tools of this search engine.

Objectives :

  • Analyze search problems on the Internet.
  • Learn to use the information retrieval tools in an appropriate way: the search engines.
  • Be aware that different interfaces are equivalent to different possibilities.
  • Know the basic use of Google and enter and practice the Advanced Search.
  • Learn other advanced features of Google.
  • Know other tools.
  • Know who is Bot 3: Google Scholar: use the simple search and use the advanced search to get the most out of the search engine.
